Abstract:  This decision document amends the September 30, 1991, Record of Decision (ROD) for the Michigan Disposal Services Landfill in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This decision document presents the selected change to address contaminated groundwater at the site, in the form of slight modifications of the selected remedial action.

The site consist of approximately 68 acres located in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The site is an inactive landfill that has a surrounding area made up of mixed industrial, commercial, and residential properties. During its operation from 1925 to 1961 the property was owned and operated by private parties as a general refuse municipal landfill. In 1961 the city of Kalamazoo bought the property and began accepting wastes from local residents, businesses, and industries. An incinerator was used to burn a majority of the waste, and the ash was deposited on the site.
Remedy:  The major components of the selected remedy include: installation of monitoring wells and performing periodic groundwater monitoring as detailed in the January 2002 Groundwater/Surface Water Interface monitoring plan, land use restrictions to prevent contact with waste and groundwater use restrictions to prevent ingestion, upgrading the previously capped 22-acre portion, and installing fencing and warning signs to restrict access.
