What Are the Risks at the Site?
The Raritan Bay Slag Site is considered Human Exposure Under Control. The primary contaminant of concern is lead. Elevated levels of lead and other heavy metals are present in soil, sediment, slag material, battery casings and associated waste and surface waters. There is a potential for persons to be exposed to elevated lead within restricted site areas through recreational uses. In addition, lead and other metals were found to pose a risk to ecological receptors within restricted areas of the site. The planned activities include working with the state to limit access to contaminated portions of the site and initiation of a remedial design for the Margaret’s Creek sector. The remedial design completion is anticipated to be completed in spring 2016. EPA ensures community participation throughout the remedial process by meeting with residents and affected stakeholders, issuing public notices and updating fact sheets. Additionally, an EPA Community Involvement Coordinator is assigned to the site and can address specific community concerns as they arise.
