Announcements and Key Topics

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), held a community meeting for the Eagle Picher Carefree Battery Superfund Site. The meeting was held:

Tuesday, October 23, 2018 6:00 p.m.
Socorro City Hall
111 School of Mines Road
Socorro, New Mexico

In the first part of the meeting, NMED gave an informal update on Operable Unit 1 (soil, construction debris, and groundwater). In the second part of the meeting, EPA presented the Proposed Plan for Operable Unit 2, Proposed Plan Available By Clicking Here (soil gas and indoor air above the groundwater plume). The Operable Unit 2 Proposed Plan identifies EPA’s preferred alternative to address vapor intrusion at the site.

The Proposed Plan provides the results of the Remedial Investigation, describes the remedial alternatives evaluated in the Feasibility Study Report, solicits public review and comment on the remedial alternative and provides information on how the public can be involved in the remedy selection process. The comment period for the proposed plan ran from Sept 6, 2018, through November 5, 2018.
