 The former Fort Devens Army Base is located 35 miles west of Boston in the towns of Ayer, Shirley, Lancaster and Harvard, Massachusetts. The base was active until it closed in 1996 under the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990. Wastes generated by the facility have contaminated soil, sediment and groundwater at the site. Long-term cleanup and monitoring are ongoing.
