SITE BACKGROUND

www.epa.gov/superfund/eastern

The 5-acre Eastern Surplus site is located in Meddybemps, Maine. From 1946 to the early 1980s, the Eastern Surplus Company, a retailer of army surplus and salvage items, operated on site. Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. After immediate actions to protect human health and the environment, construction of the site’s long-term remedy followed. Today, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.
