Superfund Site: NL INDUSTRIES, PEDRICKTOWN (OLDMANS TOWN, NJ

Superfund Site Profile

The NL Industries site is located in Pedricktown, New Jersey. A secondary lead smelting facility operated at the site from 1972 to 1982. In 1983, National Smelting of New Jersey, Inc. acquired the site property. In 1983 and 1984, the company recycled lead from spent automotive batteries on site. The batteries were drained of sulfuric acid, crushed and then processed for lead recovery at the smelting facility. The plastic and rubber waste materials resulting from the battery-crushing operation were placed in an on-site landfill. The landfill also contains slag and contaminated soils. Facility operations contaminated soil surface water, groundwater and sediments with hazardous chemicals. Access restrictions and cleanup activities to date have significantly reduced the threat of exposure to hazardous materials at the site. Design of the site’s groundwater remedy is ongoing.
