Superfund Site Profile
The Rolling Knolls Landfill site is located in Chatham, New Jersey. The nearly 200-acre area was used as an unlined landfill for just over 30 years. The privately-owned landfill, which closed in 1968, received solid waste from various parties and this waste included construction and demolition debris, household refuse and scrap metal. Landfill operations contaminated soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater with metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, freon compounds and volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Site investigations are ongoing. EPA will develop a cleanup plan based on the findings of the investigations.
