SITE BACKGROUND

Ludlow Sand and Gravel site is located in Paris, New York. The 18-acre area is a landfill and gravel pit on a larger 130-acre property. The landfill began receiving municipal refuse from surrounding communities in the 1960s. The landfill also received bulk liquids, including septage, waste oils, coolants and sludges containing metals. Landfill operations resulted in the contamination of soil, surface water and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. The landfill was shut down by court order in 1988. The site’s long-term remedy has been put in place. Groundwater treatment and monitoring are ongoing.
