Superfund Site: SEALAND RESTORATION, INC.
Superfund Site Profile
The Sealand Restoration, Inc. site is located in Lisbon, New York. A disposal facility for hazardous materials, such as petroleum wastes, operated at the 210-acre area. Groundwater was contaminated with heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are potentially harmful contaminants that can easily evaporate into the air. Soils were found to contain low levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, heavy metals and phenols, which are chemicals used to make plastics and detergents. Surface water also was found to be contaminated with metals. Following site investigations, a long-term cleanup remedy was put in place. Under current conditions at the site, potential or actual human exposures are under control.
