Superfund Site: BYRON BARREL & DRUM, BYRON TOWNSHIP, NY

Superfund Site Profile

The Byron Barrel & Drum site is located in Genesee County, New York. The site is about 2 acres of an 8-acre property off of Transit Road in a rural area. The site was used as a salvage yard for heavy construction equipment; hazardous wastes were also disposed of there. Drums of chemical wastes were abandoned on site without any spill control or containment provisions. Other drums were ripped open or crushed, mixed with soil, and covered over, contaminating soil and groundwater with hazardous substances. Emergency actions to protect human health and the environment have been completed. Long-term cleanup is ongoing.
