Superfund Site: CROWN CLEANERS OF WATERTOWN INC., CARTHAGE, NY

Superfund Site Profile

The 9.8-acre Crown Cleaners of Watertown Inc. site is a former dry cleaning and laundry facility in Herrings, New York. Crown Cleaners of Watertown operated the facility from the late 1970s until 1991. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and machine oils and greases were used in the dry cleaning process. In 1991, sampling indicated that the public water supply was contaminated and the State subsequently installed a treatment system to protect public health. Initial cleanup actions by EPA included building demolition and removal of contaminated sludge, debris and waste oil. The site’s long-term cleanup is ongoing.
