EPA Superfund Program: TYLER REFRIGERATION PIT, SMYRNA, DE

Superfund Site Profile

The three-acre Tyler Refrigeration Pit site is located in Smyrna, Delaware. Tyler Refrigeration used solvents to degrease and clean refrigeration equipment at the site from 1952 to 1969. Operations dumped spent solvents, paint wastes and sludge into two unlined disposal pits. Waste disposal activities contaminated groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following site investigations, EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2004. Metal Masters currently occupies the site and continues to operate the groundwater monitoring system.
