EPA Superfund Program: LIMESTONE ROAD, CUMBERLAND, MD

Superfund Site Profile

The Limestone Road site is located in Cumberland in Allegany County, Maryland. The area includes two separate parcels of land on opposite sides of Limestone Road. The parcels include the 20-acre former Diggs Sanitation Company property (Diggs) and the 190-acre Cumberland Cement and Supply Company property (CC&SC). During the 1960s and 1970s, both properties received commercial, residential and demolition waste. In 1981, illegal dumping of about 110 tons of waste sludge containing chromium, lead and cadmium took place on both properties. Waste disposal activities contaminated soil, surface water and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
