Superfund Site Profile
Five-Year Reviews generally are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) or program policy when hazardous substances remain on site above levels which permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-year reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the implementation and performance of a remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
EPA completed the most recent five-year review (PDF) of the Recticon/Allied Steel Superfund Site in May 2015. The Review found that the Site is protective of human health and the environment and has met all of its cleanup goals and Remedial Action Objectives. The cleanup of the Recticon/Allied Steel Superfund Site is now considered complete.
The 5-acre Recticon/Allied Steel Corp. site is located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The site consists of two properties: the former Recticon facility and the Allied Steel Products Corporation facility. Recticon was a subsidiary of Rockwell International, manufacturers of silicon wafers from 1974 to 1981. Historical operations and spills at the site contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
