EPA Superfund Program: EAST MOUNT ZION, SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP, PA

Superfund Site Profile

The East Mount Zion site, located in Springettsbury, York County, Pennsylvania, is a privately owned, inactive, 10-acre landfill that accepted municipal and industrial wastes, including electroplating sludge, from 1955 to 1972. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) attempted to close the dump during the 1960s and early 1970s. After extensive legal action, the site was closed in 1972. Final closing activities, including a soil cover, were completed in 1976; however, groundwater at the site had become contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the landfill.
