The 4-acre Berks Sand Pit site, located in Longswamp Township, Pennsylvania, was reportedly used as a disposal area for industrial wastes as well as by area residents for the disposal of refuse. The pit was created by the removal of sand and gravel. Site activities include contaminated groundwater and sediment from hazardous chemicals.
In January 1982, residents detected groundwater contamination in the area. At one time, the contaminated groundwater plume impacted 30 residences in Longswamp Township.
