Background

The 178-acre Old City of York Landfill Site is in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles south of the City of York. From 1961 to 1975, a landfill operated on 56 acres of the Site, receiving predominantly municipal waste with some commercial and industrial wastes. In 1981, EPA and state investigators found the landfill was contaminating groundwater and residential well water with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the chemical components of solvents. The Site was added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in September 1983.
