EPA Superfund Program: BELL LANDFILL, TERRY TOWNSHIP, PA

Superfund Site Profile

The 33-acre Bell Landfill site is located in Terry Township, Pennsylvania. Prior to 1970, the privately owned and operated site served primarily as an open dump for municipal trash. From 1978 to 1982, the state licensed the landfill owner to accept over 8,000 tons ferric hydroxide sludge in an asphalt-lined portion of the fill area. Waste disposal activities at the site contaminated soil, groundwater and leachate with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
