EPA Superfund Program: LEHIGH ELECTRIC & ENGINEERING CO., OLD FORGE, PA

Superfund Site Profile

The Lehigh Electric & Engineering Co. site is located in Old Forge in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The 5 ½-acre area was part of a coal processing facility. From the mid-1970s to 1981, an electrical equipment repair and storage yard for about 4,000 transformers and capacitors operated on site. Improper handling and disposal of dielectric fluids containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) resulted in soil and debris contamination. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing. EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in March 1986.
