EPA Superfund Program: HUNTERSTOWN ROAD, STRABAN TOWNSHIP, PA

Superfund Site Profile

The 22-acre Hunterstown Road site is located in Adams County, Pennsylvania. From 1970 to 1980, the property owner disposed of wastes from several companies at six different areas on the site. Site activities included disposing of liquid wastes, such as paint sludge and solvents in the Lagoon Area; disposing of asbestos wastes and drums in the Borrow Area; spraying toxic sludge on actively farmed cornfields and burying drums in the Drum Burial Areas: and disposing of metal-contaminated wastes at the Stressed Vegetation Area.
These activities contaminated soil, surface water and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
