SALTVILLE WASTE DISPOSAL PONDS
Superfund Site Profile
The Saltville Waste Disposal Ponds Site is located in Saltville, Virginia. It includes the former Olin Corporation chlorine plant, two waste disposal ponds, and the North Fork Holston and Holston Rivers.
Olin manufactured various chemicals, including chlorine gas, on-Site from 1895 to 1972. Production wastes, including mercury and alkaline wastes, were disposed of in two on-Site areas, Ponds 5 and 6. Disposal operations contaminated soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater and caused contaminant accumulation in fish in the North Fork Holston River. The Site was added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in 1983.
