Superfund Site Profile
The Follansbee Site is an active coal and tar processing plant in Follansbee, West Virginia. The Site has changed ownership several times since 1917, but remains in operation. Leaking tanks, spills, waste storage in surface impoundments, and improper operating practices contaminated soil, sediment, and groundwater with hazardous chemicals.
EPA added the Site to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in 1982. In 1990, EPA and the Site’s potentially responsible parties signed an agreement to clean up the Site as part of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Corrective Action program. The Site was deleted from the NPL in 2004.
