EPA Superfund Program: FOLLANSBEE, FOLLANSBEE, WV

Superfund Site Profile

The 26-acre Follansbee site is an active coal and tar processing plant in Follansbee, West Virginia. It is located along the east bank of the Ohio River. Since operations began in 1914, the plant has changed ownership several times but remained in operation. Leaking tanks, spills, waste storage in surface impoundments and improper operating practices contaminated soil, sediment and groundwater with hazardous chemicals.

In 1990, EPA and the site’s potentially responsible parties (PRPs) signed an agreement to cleanup the site as part of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program. EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2004.
