EPA Superfund Program: PECK IRON AND METAL, PORTSMOUTH, VA

Superfund Site Profile

The 33-acre Peck Iron and Metal site is located in Portsmouth, Virginia. From 1945 to 1999, Peck Iron and Metal purchased, processed, stored and shipped metal scrap from various military bases, government agencies and local businesses. Some of the scrap materials contained cadmium (automobile parts), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (insulated wire, gaskets, fluorescent lights and transformer oils), and lead (scrapped bridge sections and automobile batteries). Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with PCBs and metals. Investigation of the site is ongoing.
