EPA Superfund Program: BEAUNIT CORP. (CIRCULAR KNIT & DYEING PLANT), FOUNTAIN INN, SC

Superfund Site Profile

The Beaunit Corp. (Circular Knit & Dyeing Plant) site is located along Valley View Road in northwest Fountain Inn, 15 miles southeast of Greenville. It includes a lagoon area where a knitting, dyeing and finishing plant disposed of wastewater from its operations from 1951 to 1977. EPA placed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 1990 because of contaminated groundwater and soil resulting from waste handling practices.

EPA, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), and the site’s potentially responsible parties (PRPs) have investigated site conditions and taken steps to clean up the site in order to protect people and the environment from contamination. Site contamination does not currently threaten people living and working near the site. By monitoring groundwater, placing institutional controls on the site property and undertaking required Five-Year Reviews, EPA, SCDHEC and the site’s PRPs continue to protect people and the environment from site contamination.
