EPA Superfund Program: PALMETTO RECYCLING, INC., COLUMBIA, SC

Superfund Site Profile

The Palmetto Recycling, Inc. site is located in Columbia, South Carolina. It includes an area where Palmetto Recycling, Inc. operated a lead battery reclamation facility from 1979 to 1983. EPA placed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 1987 because of contaminated soil resulting from facility operations. EPA, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), and the site’s potentially responsible party (PRP) have investigated site conditions and taken steps to clean up the site in order to protect people and the environment from contamination. In 2000, EPA took the site off the NPL after determining that the site no longer poses a threat to people or the environment.
