EPA Superfund Program: BYRON SALVAGE YARD, BYRON, IL

Superfund Site Profile

The Byron Salvage Yard site is located in Ogle County, Illinois. It includes two areas – the Byron Salvage Yard (BSY) and the Dirk’s Farm Property (DFP). During the 1960s and 1970s, facilities on site accepted drums of electroplating wastes and other materials (oil sludges, paint sludges, cutting wheels, solvents and scrap metal). Industrial wastes were reportedly dumped directly on the ground at the BSY. Similar dumping practices also took place during the same period at the DFP. During heavy rainfall, the waste would be carried off site by the resulting surface waste runoff. Plating waste containing cyanide was also sprayed onto site roads to control dust. Following cleanup, groundwater monitoring is ongoing.
