Superfund Site: WAUCONDA SAND & GRAVEL
Superfund Site Profile
The 60-acre Wauconda Sand and Gravel site is located in Lake County, Illinois. It includes six acres of licensed and 43 acres of unlicensed landfill areas. From around 1955 until 1978, a municipal waste landfill operated on site. About 3 million cubic yards of waste were placed in the landfill. The entire site was closed and covered with a layer of clay, soil and vegetation in 1978. Sampling later found that groundwater (undergroundwater) was contaminated with heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and pesticides. Following cleanup, the site’s remedy is in place. Additional activities to ensure the remedy’s long-term protectiveness are ongoing.
