EPA Superfund Program: CIRCLE SMELTING CORP., BECKEMEYER, IL

Superfund Site Profile

The Circle Smelting Corporation site is located in Beckemeyer, Illinois. A zinc refinery operated on the site from 1904 to 1994. Site operators discarded residual metals, coal cinders and slag from the smelting process in piles on the 28-acre property. These disposal practices resulted in elevated concentrations of lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel and copper in the soil. The potentially responsible party (PRP) entered into an agreement with EPA in 1997 to clean up the former smelter property and nearby affected residential areas. Cleanup activities began in 1998 and are still underway.
