Superfund Site: MIG/DEWANE LANDFILL
Superfund Site Profile
The 50-acre MIG/DeWane Landfill site is located near Belvidere in Boone County, Illinois. It consists of a 47-acre landfill and leachate impoundment system operated from 1969 until its abandonment in 1988. The landfill received household and municipal wastes as well as industrial wastes, including paint sludge, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), asbestos and liquids containing heavy metals. In 1984, EPA inspected the site and determined that landfill waste and leachate were contaminating site soil, groundwater and sediment, and that the potential existed for surface water contamination and direct exposure of humans to contaminants. Site cleanup is ongoing.
