EPA Superfund Program: NORTHERNAIRE PLATING, CADILLAC, MI

Superfund Site Profile

The 13-acre Northernaire Plating Company (Northernaire) site is located in Cadillac, Michigan. Northernaire was a small electroplating facility. From 1971 to 1981, it did custom chromium and nickel plating work on metal parts. Improper waste handling and faulty sewer systems led to the release of hexavalent chromium and cadmium into the soil and groundwater. Due to cleanup efforts, however, there is no remaining groundwater contamination associated with the site. EPA plans to take the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in late 2016.
