EPA Superfund Program: BURLINGTON NORTHERN (BRAINERD/BAXTER PLANT), BRAINERD/BAXTER, MN

Superfund Site Profile

The Burlington Northern (Brainerd/Baxter Plant) site is located between the cities of Brainerd and Baxter in Minnesota. A railroad-tie treatment facility operated at the site from about 1907 to 1986. Two shallow unlined ponds received wastewater generated from the wood-treating process. This created a sludge, which contaminated underlying soils and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
