Superfund Site Profile

The 23-acre Refuse Hideaway Landfill site is located in Dane County, Wisconsin. The landfill accepted municipal, commercial and industrial wastes from 1974 to 1988, when it was closed by order of a state court. The owner of the landfill, under state oversight, complied with the closing order by installing a clay and soil cap and seeding the cover. Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.
