A former skeet shooting range used to operate from the Miami Valley Hunt & Polo Club in the 1930s to the 1950s. A portion of the shooting range eventually became Layer Park. An unknown quantity of lead was deposited on the surface of the soil from skeet activities. Old aerial photos show two skeet-shooting stations were located on the grounds of the Miami Valley Hunt and Polo Club south of the park.
