The Evergreen Manor Superfund site is a narrow, 2-mile long area of low-level groundwater contamination located in Roscoe Township, Winnebago County, Ill. “Groundwater” is an environmental term for underground supplies of fresh water. The site was discovered in 1990 when a mortgage company required a homeowner to sample their well and found elevated levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE, and tetrachloroethylen, or PCE. These belong to a chemical family called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Low levels of other VOCs were also detected in the groundwater.
