EPA Superfund Program: PENTA WOOD PRODUCTS, DANIELS, WI

Superfund Site Profile

The Penta Wood Products (PWP) site is located in the town of Siren in Burnett County, Wisconsin. An inactive wood treatment facility is located on an 80-acre part of the 120-acre site property. It operated from 1953 to 1992 using a chemical called pentachlorophenol, or PCP, to treat wood posts and telephone poles. Back then, the site consisted of a main treatment building, an oil/water separator building, a gully where wastewater was discharged, a wastewater lagoon, a wood chip pile and several other buildings, sawmills, garages and storage sheds. Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with PCP and arsenic. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.  In September 2014, the State of WI took over O&M activites and continue operation to date.
