Superfund Site Profile
The 400-acre North Alcoa site is located in a mixed-use area in East St. Louis, Illinois. Aluminum production operations began on site in 1902. The plant operated until the late 1950s; by the mid-1960s, most production facilities had been demolished and the property sold. Cleanup began in 2001 and is ongoing. The site is not listed on the National Priorities List (NPL) but is considered to be an NPL-caliber site and is being addressed through the Superfund Alternative Approach.
