Superfund Site: GURLEY PIT
Superfund Site Profile
The Gurley Pit site is located in Edmondson, Arkansas, in the floodplain of the Fifteen Mile Bayou. From 1970 to 1975, the Gurley Refining Company, Inc. (GRC) leased the area from W.A. Caldwell and disposed of secondary oil refining wastes, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead and zinc, in three pits at the site. GRC abandoned the site in 1976. Disposal practices contaminated soil, sediment, and surface water with hazardous chemicals. Following construction of the site’s remedy, EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in November 2003. Operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.
