Superfund Site Profile
The E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company, Inc. (County Road X23) site consists of two subsites—Baier and McCarl—located in rural Lee County, near West Point, Iowa. Between 1949 and 1953, an estimated 48,000 to 72,000 55-gallon drums of waste generated from DuPont’s paint manufacturing facility in Fort Madison, Iowa, were disposed at the site. The wastes contaminated groundwater and soil at the two subsites with metals and organic compounds. Ash and unburned sludges were also present on the site. The site was listed on EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL) in September 1990. Following cleanup, the EPA deleted the site from the NPL in September 1995. Groundwater monitoring and cap maintenance are ongoing.
