EPA Superfund Program: KOPPERS CO., INC. (OROVILLE PLANT), OROVILLE, CA

Superfund Site Profile

The 205-acre Koppers Co., Inc. (Oroville Plant) site is located two miles south of Oroville in Butte County, California. Between 1948 and 2001, Koppers chemically treated wood on site to protect against deterioration by insects or fungi. Soil, surface water and groundwater at the site was contaminated by pentachlorophenol (PCP) and other hazardous substances. Contaminated soil was excavated and placed in two on-site disposal cells. The groundwater is currently being pumped from the ground, treated and re-injected into the aquifer.
