Superfund Site Profile

The 22-acre Fairchild Semiconductor Corp. (South San Jose Plant) site is located in Santa Clara County, California, about nine miles southeast of downtown San Jose. An electronics and semiconductor fabrication facility operated on site from 1977 to 1983. Solvents containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs; primarily 1,1,1-TCA) were used at the site. Other chemicals, such as acids, were also used and stored at the site. Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following construction of the site’s remedy, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing. A retail shopping center is now located on site.
