Superfund Site Profile

The 550-acre South Bay Asbestos Area site is located in Alviso, California. Three landfills within the site’s boundaries received asbestos wastes from an asbestos-cement pipe manufacturing plant from 1953 to 1982. The site also includes a levee around the city of San Jose that contained asbestos-contaminated material. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.
