EPA Superfund Program: ARCTIC SURPLUS, FAIRBANKS, AK

Superfund Site Profile

The 25-acre Arctic Surplus site is located six miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska. A salvage business operated at the site and accepted U.S. Department of Defense military equipment, asbestos insulation and other various chemicals. In addition, the business recovered scrap metals by deconstructing batteries and transformers. Site activities contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2006.
