Update: Start of 5th Five-Year Review
The EPA is starting the latest Protectiveness Review for the Teledyne Wah Chang Superfund Site. Protectiveness Reviews assess sites every five years to ensure cleanups continue to be protective of human health and the environment.
The site was contaminated by wastes, including radionuclides and volatile organic compounds, from a metals production plant. These contaminants impacted soils, sediments, and groundwater. Cleanups took place during the mid and late 1990s. The cleanup combined soil excavation, installation of a system that extracts and treats contaminated groundwater, and land use restrictions. The groundwater extraction and treatment, enhanced by microbial and chemical treatment, is ongoing. Groundwater cleanup levels are expected to be met in 2017.

The 225-acre Oremet-Wah Chang (OWC) plant (formerly Teledyne Wah Chang) site is located in Millersburg, Oregon. It is one of the largest producers of rare earth metals and alloys in the United States. The site consists of a 110-acre plant and a 115-acre area made up of four ponds containing sludges from the plant's wastewater treatment facility. It also includes a 60-acre field where sludges containing radium were used as a soil amendment. Process wastes disposed of on the site contained radionuclides, heavy metals and chlorinated solvents. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are ongoing.
