Update: Cleanup to be Reviewed
The Environmental Protection Agency is starting the latest review for the Gould, Inc. Superfund Site. The Gould, Inc. cleanup was completed in 2000, and the site was removed from the Superfund National Priorities List in 2002. After finishing the cleanup for a Superfund Site, EPA assesses the site every five years to ensure the cleanup continues to be protective of human health and the environment.
As part of the Fifth Five-Year Review for Gould, Inc., a site visit is planned for March 20, 2017. The review will be completed by September 2017.
Gould Inc. is located within the Portland Harbor Superfund Site area along the Willamette River. It is not part of the Portland Harbor Cleanup because the cleanup at this site is complete and remains protective of human health and the environment.

The Gould, Inc. Superfund Site is a ten-acre site located in an industrial area known as Doane Lake in northwest Portland, Oregon. A secondary lead smelter and lead oxide production facility operated at the site from 1949 until 1981. Site activities included on-site disposal of about 87,000 tons of battery casings and discharge of about six million gallons of acid into a nearby lake. Herbicides and presticides from an adjacent production facility contributed to site contamination. These activities contaminated debris, soil, lake sediment and surface water with hazardous chemicals.
