EPA Superfund Program: GOULD, INC., PORTLAND, OR

Superfund Site Profile

The 10-acre Gould, Inc. site is located in Portland, Oregon. A secondary lead smelter and lead oxide production facility operated at the site from 1949 until 1981. Site activities included on-site disposal of about 87,000 tons of battery casings and discharge of about six million gallons of acid into a nearby lake. These activities contaminated debris, soil, lake sediment and surface water with hazardous chemicals. Following cleanup, EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2002. Groundwater monitoring is ongoing.
