Background

Elmendorf Air Force Base covers about 13,130 acres in Anchorage, Alaska. Beginning in the mid-1940s, operations at the base generated hazardous and non-hazardous wastes from industrial and airfield operations, fire training and fuels management. Site activities contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. EPA has divided the site into several operable units (OUs) to better address site cleanup. Remedial actions are underway at some OUs. The Air Force is currently performing investigations for the remaining OUs in order to assess the nature and extent of site contamination and to establish appropriate cleanup options.
