EPA Superfund Program: BLACK BUTTE MINE, COTTAGE GROVE, OR

Superfund Site Profile

The most current information about the Black Butte Mine Superfund site is available at https://yosemite.epa.gov/R10/cleanup.nsf/sites/bbm. Please bear with us while we reorganize our website.

The Black Butte Mine site is located near Cottage Grove, Oregon. Between the late 1880s and late 1960s, mercury mining operations included extracting ore from the mine, crushing it on site, roasting it in kilns to volatilize the mercury, and bottling and shipping the mercury. Mining operations, tailings piles left at the site and erosion from Furnace Creek contaminated soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater with metals. Site cleanup is not yet underway. EPA is currently doing a remedial investigation and feasibility study to assess the nature and extent of site contamination, and to determine appropriate cleanup options.
