The Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site is a five-mile stretch of the Duwamish River that flows into Elliott Bay in Seattle, Washington. A century of heavy industrial use left waterway sediments contaminated with toxic chemicals from many sources, including industries along its banks, stormwater pipes and runoff from upland activities, streets and roads. Site investigations are underway to assess the nature and extent of contamination and to establish appropriate cleanup options. Removal actions, or short-term cleanups, are also underway.
